2010 WORKCAMP INFO SHEETS

1.) Jan 2010 - Doho youth group- Nyanza Province (Lake Victoria)

Touch Africa Network (TAN) January International Work Camp will be at Doho youth group project site in Luero village, Ukwala  location, Siaya district, Nyanza province of Kenya near Lake Victoria from 9th January to 29th January 2010.. Doho youth group was stated in 1997 as a socio-economic and cultural group. Currently it operates a pre-primary center and a feeding program for orphan children. They also operate a theater group which they use to create awareness on Hiv/Aids and anti social behaviors in their community. The group also facilitates capacity building in their community with the help of local non governmental organizations and has been instrumental many times in carrying out community mobilization in their community. Volunteers will be accommodated in one of the homestead in the area and they prepare their own meals in turns. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; -

  1. Build a new class room for the orphan children using locally available material.
  2. Carry out repair works on the old classroom and the kitchen which was constructed in 2007 by other volunteers.
  3. Plant trees around the centre (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  4. Teach and play with the children during the day.
  5. Work in the centers kitchen preparing food for the children and also serving them(the school runs a government sponsored feeding program).
  6. Volunteer in nearby primary school (Mathiwa primary school).
  7. Join the group when they are performing plays at the local market during market days.

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International airport (JKIA) you will be met by TAN staff.
Their will be an orientation on the 8TH January 2010 at TAN offices in Nairobi. Therefore volunteers are advised to make plans to arrive before this date. It is a MUST to participate in the work camp orientation on the 8th in Nairobi. Participants will leave for the work camp on the 9th January 2010 early in the morning. Its about 8 hours journey to Luero village.

2.) February 2010 - Illasit primary school- Great Rift Valley Province

Touch Africa Network(TAN) February work camp will be held at illacit primary school in Kajiado District, Rift Valley Province(Maasai land), Southern Kenya near the border with Tanzania from the 9th to 29th February 2010. Illasit primary school is a public primary school. It is situated in Maasai land and since its situated near the border with Tanzania it also caters for children from Tanzania looking for free primary education that is offered in Kenya. The school has a student population of 1,982 and 32 teachers. The school is in great proximity to Mt. Kilimanjaro and volunteer wake up to the scenic view of the mountain on clear mornings. Volunteers will be accommodated at one of the school building. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp;-

  1. Start a big vegetable garden to supplement the school feeding program.
  2. Sensitize Maasai women against female genital mutilation (FGM) through existing local initiatives.
  3. Plant trees around the school (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  4. Teach and help the teachers grade the student’s school work.
  5. Work in the school kitchen (the school runs a government sponsored feeding program).
  6. Volunteer in nearby community health center.
  7. Join the community in a clean up campaign.

3.) March 2010 - Mavuno Women’s Group- Coast Province

Touch Africa Network (TAN) March work camp will be held at Mavuno women’s group project site in chelani village on the shores of the Indian Ocean, Malindi District, Coast province of Kenya from the 9th of March 2010 to 29th March 2010. Mavuno Women’s Group is a self help group (SHG) engaged in income generating activities and social initiatives such as creating awareness on Hiv/Aids through dances and plays. It was started in 2001 with a membership of only 10 women. The group has since grown to a membership of 42 with the majority being widows. The group’s income generating activities involves bead works, weaving and handcrafts which they sell to tourists at the local market. Volunteers will be accommodated in a nearby school building. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; -

  1. Join the women in making bead works, weaving and hand crafts.
  2. Join the group in rehearsing their plays and dances on Hiv/Aids issues which are performed in the local churches and market.
  3. Plant trees around the church (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  4. Organize the women in strengthening there micro saving and credit project and mobilize local community members to join the scheme.
  5. Volunteer in nearby community health center.
  6. Join the community in a beach clean up campaign.

4.) April 2010 - Emining Small Scale Farmers Project.

Touch Africa Network (TAN) April work camp will be held at Emining small scale farmers project site in Emining village in Baringo district, near Nakuru town in the Rift valley province from the 9th of April 2010 to 29th April 2010. Emining small scale farmers(ESSF) is a self help group (SHG) engaged in income generating activities. It was started in 1999 with just a few members. The group has since grown to a membership of 30. The group’s income generating activities involves planting passion fruits and trees in a seedling nursery and then plant them in there farm and also sell some of them in large numbers to other farmers from the next district. Volunteers will be accommodated in a nearby host family of one of the members. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; -

  1. Join the members in starting new nurseries for seedlings.
  2. Transplanting of seedling to the main farm.
  3. Help in other farm work which include milking, feeding poultry, Procesing and                         
  4. packaging harvested honey for sale in the local market.
  5. Creating Hiv/Aids awareness by holding meetings with youth groups in the area.
  6. Plant trees around the market (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  7. Organize the group in strengthening there micro saving and credit project and mobilize local community members to join the scheme.
  8. Volunteer in nearby community health center.

5.) May 2010 - Nomad Orphan Home

Touch Africa Network (TAN) May work camp will be held at Nomad Orphan Home in Makueni District, Eastern province of Kenya from the 9th of May 2010 to 29th May 2010. The orphan home was started by three Amrican girls who after working in Kenya came back to start the orphan home. The home cares for orphans and abandoned children from the District of Makueni. They are caring for about 35 orphans at the moment. Volunteers will be accommodated in a building in the orphan home. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; -

  1. Repair buildings in the orphan home which include painting the home.
  2. Build playing structures for the children such as swings.
  3. Help the house mother in the general daily chores which include cooking for the children, cleaning the home and playing with the children.
  4. Plant trees around the church (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  5. Organize women in the neighboring community in strengthening there micro saving and credit projects and mobilize local community members to join the scheme.
  6. Volunteer in nearby public primary school.

6.) June 2010 – Nyakach Womens group

Touch Africa Network (TAN) June work camp will be held at Nyakach women’s group project site in Nyakach, Kakamega District, Western province of Kenya from the 9th of June 2010 to 29th June 2010. Nyakach Women’s Group is a self help group (SHG) engaged in income generating activities and social initiatives such as creating awareness on Hiv/Aids, Home based care of Hiv/Aids patients In the area. It is also involved in capacity building whereby members of the group carryout training members of the community as community health workers.  Nyakach Womens Group was started 2002 and now is affiliated with about 12 other self help groups in Kakamega and they carryout inter group training and exchanges ideas. The group’s income generating activities involves weaving of baskets and handcrafts which they sell at the local market. Volunteers will be accommodated in one of the group members homestead. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; -

  1. Build an open but roofed structure that the women can use as there workshop while working and can also use it o hold there meetings. At the moment the group works under trees in the compound.
  2. Join the women in weaving of baskets and sleeping mats using reeds.
  3. Help the women in harvesting of the reeds and processing them for use in weaving.
  4. Join the group in preparing for training(workshops and seminars) sessions on Hiv/Aids issues which are taught to other women’s and organized community groups.
  5. Plant trees around the compound (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  6. Organize the women in strengthening there micro saving and credit project and mobilize local community members to join the scheme.
  7. Volunteer in nearby primary school.

7.) July 2010 - Ngilai Self Help Group

Touch Africa Network (TAN) July work camp will be held at Ngilai self help group project site in Ngilai village, Wamba District, Northern parts of Rift Valley province of Kenya from the 9th of July 2010 to 29th July 2010. Ngilai self help group is a self help group engaged in income generating activities and social initiatives such as creating awareness on Hiv/Aids, female genital mutilation(FGM) which is still practiced by the community. The group also sensitizes on the need for girl child education and fights against early marriages of girls, there are situations where girls as young as 10 years are still being married off to 60 year old men. The group’s income generating activities involves bead works, weaving and handcrafts they are also involved in bee keeping for honey and wax which they sell at the local market. Volunteers will be accommodated in a nearby school building. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp:-

  1. Join the women in making bead works, weaving and hand crafts.
  2. Help the community in preparing for community workshop on sensitizing the community on Hiv/Aids, FGM, early child marriage, and girl child education issues, .
  3. Start nurseries for the community vegetable gardens. Vegetables from the garden are sold at the local market and supplement the group earnings.
  4. Volunteer at Ngilai community clinic which is the only medical facility in the area.
  5. Accompany Ngilai community mobile clinic in serving nomadic families.
  6. Organize the women in strengthening there micro saving and credit project in 2007 during a previous work camp.

Touch Africa Network (TAN) August work camp will be held at Vyumbi women’s group project site in Vyumbi village, Nanyuki District, Eastern province of Kenya from the 9th of August 2010 to 29th August 2010. Vyumbi Women’s Group is a self help group (SHG) engaged in income generating activities and social initiatives such as creating awareness on Hiv/Aids and caring for mentally disabled children from the area in a nearby orphan home. The group’s income generating activities involves farming whereby the produce are sold at the local market. Volunteers will be accommodated in a nearby church building. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; -

  1. Join the group in farm work which may include planting, weeding, harvesting and processing the produce for sell to the local market. Proceeds from the sell of farm produce supplement income of the group members.
  2. Join the group as they volunteer at the orphan home for the mentally disabled children.
  3. Join the group in rehearsing their plays and dances on Hiv/Aids issues which are performed in the local churches and market.
  4. Plant trees around the church (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  5. Organize the women in strengthening there micro saving and credit project and mobilize local community members to join the scheme.
  6. Volunteer in nearby community health center.
  7. Join the women as they visit other self help groups for inter group activities such as clean-up campaigns.

Touch Africa Network (TAN) October work camp will be held at Kambi Moja Self Help  group project site Kambi Moja village, Machakos District, Eastern province of Kenya from the 9th of October 2010 to 29th October 2010. Kambi Moja is a self help group (SHG) engaged in income generating activities and social initiatives such as creating awareness on Hiv/Aids through dances and plays. The group’s income generating activities involves bead carving and handcrafts which they sell to middle en who sell them to tourists in Nairobi. Volunteers will be accommodated in a nearby school building. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; -

  1. Join the group in collecting materials for carvings.
  2. Join the group in rehearsing their plays and dances on Hiv/Aids issues which are performed in the local churches and market.
  3. Plant trees around the community (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).
  4. Organize the group in strengthening there micro saving and credit project and mobilize local community members to join the scheme.
  5. Volunteer in nearby community health center.
